What Is The Proper Way To Sit At Your Desk?

Let’s talk about ergonomics for those of you who work at a desk all day.

Is it better to sit higher or lower in a chair?

The first thing that you want to ensure is that your chair is the right height for you. A proper chair is going to allow your feet to fully rest on the floor and allow for support of your arms with your shoulders totally relaxed and your arms at a 90-degree angle.

What is the correct keyboard posture?

We need to make sure that the keyboard is also at that 90-degree angle. Often, what I see with people who work at a desk is that you have to raise up to reach a keyboard. I have this keyboard tray, it avoids me having to be raised up, which would hurt my shoulders. So, at a 90-degree angle for the keyboard and the mouse, and then we’re looking for the middle of the screen to be just slightly below eye level.

Tips to remember:

  • Choose a chair of the right height.
  • The keyboard and mouse should be at a 90 -degree angle.
  • The middle of the screen should be just slightly below eye level.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the ideal desk chair height?

Your chair height should allow feet flat on floor, thighs parallel to ground, and elbows at 90 degrees when typing. The seat edge should have 2-3 fingers’ space behind your knees.

Even perfect ergonomics can’t prevent all spinal stress – regular adjustments at HealthWorks maintain optimal alignment.

Where should my computer monitor be positioned?

Position your monitor 20-26 inches away, with the top third at eye level. The screen should be perpendicular to windows to avoid glare, slightly tilted back 10-20 degrees.

Our posture assessments identify your specific ergonomic needs based on your unique spinal alignment.

How important is armrest positioning?

Proper armrests reduce shoulder strain by 50%, supporting elbows at 90 degrees while keeping shoulders relaxed. They should allow arms to rest naturally without lifting shoulders or spreading elbows.
